Destiny 2’s PC launch went more smoothly than you might expect, will little to no major issues. There’s a few known problems that Bungie are working on, but they’re mostly affecting a minor section of players. That is, apart from claims that innocent players are getting banned for cheating, simply for using third-party programs for game capture or voice communication.

A list of programs on the Destiny 2 subreddit claimed that players using OBS or XSPLIT (two video capture programs that are explicitly not supported when the game is in fullscreen mode), the overlay parts to Fraps, Discord, or Mumble, and hardware monitoring software MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision XOC can be permanently banned for using them while in the game.

Since players have made these claims, though, Bungie have issued a full statement on the matter, making it clear that this is not the case, however, as there are no automatic bans in Destiny 2, and only those “using tools that pose a threat to the shared ecosystem of the game” were banned.

We have seen lots of questions about bans being issued in the PC version of Destiny 2. To provide some information, we would like to share some facts.

The following is true:

  • Destiny 2 cannot automatically ban you, only Bungie can ban a player after a manual investigation
  • Yesterday, we banned approximately 400 players on PC
  • Bans were applied to players who were using tools that pose a threat to the shared ecosystem of the game
  • We did not (and will not) issue any bans for the use of overlays or performance tools, including Discord, Xsplit, OBS, RTSS, etc.
  • Information on using third-party applications can be found here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Help/Article/46101
  • We are overturning 4 of the bans that were issued during the PC Beta

We are committed to providing an experience that is fun and fair for the millions of players who have joined us in this community.

On Twitter, David Shaw stated that, while Destiny 2 will “block programs from pushing their code into [their] game,” which overlays generally do, players won’t be banned for it. He even went as far to say claims otherwise are “internet BS.”

When we interviewed David Shaw and Thomas Gawrys, from Bungie and Vicarious Visions respectively, Shaw made it clear that there’s a dedicated team working on preventing cheating and hacking in Destiny 2, as PC has different vulnerabilities to console.

“One of the things you kinda get for free on the console platforms is they go out of their way to make themselves as secure as they can be, and so there’s some thing you can, if not take for granted, you can maybe focus on a little bit less, with PC you have to pretty much expect that anyone who downloads your game can go and try to do interesting and nefarious things to it, so you have to take it seriously. We have a dedicated team that’s working on that, and they will continue to keep an eye on it and keep working on things even after we launch. “

While programs with overlays are not compatible with Destiny 2, you will not be banned for using them, according to Bungie.
