Mario and Sonic the hedgehog are some of the most recognizable characters in video game history. Many of us have grown up with either a Mario or Sonic game in our households.
They have been the face of Nintendo and Sega companies, and have sparked an age long debate on who is better: Mario or Sonic? Now before you decide, keep in mind that this is based on facts, but mostly opinion so there is no right or wrong answer.
The History of Mario
Mario has been the face of Nintendo for many decades now. Originally first appearing July 9, 1981 in a Donkey Kong game, Mario’s presence has spawned over several game systems, television, and movies. Mario has been in over 200 games and in just about every genre of video games.
Even in 2016, Mario is still a commanding face in the video game world. Analysts suggest that in 2012 the Mario franchise was valued over $10 billion. Mario has appeared in just about all different genres of video games from racing, puzzle, and even fighting games. All those different Mario games have sold over 500 million copies making it the best selling video game franchise of all-time. So it’s easy to crown Mario the winner.
Sonic the Hedgehog burst onto the scene on June 23, 1991, with the Sega Genesis console. Armed with super speed, Sonic & his friends having been trying to save the world from the evil Dr. Robotnik for decades. Just like Mario, Sonic’s line of work is just as impressive. He’s been the face of Sega, and has appeared in a bunch of games that’s covered a span several consoles for over 26 years.
At one time it looked as though the Sonic franchise would be in jeopardy, after the Sega Dreamcast, Sega stopped making game consoles. But Sonic continued on but instead of being only found on Sega consoles, now Sonic games could be found on Xbox, PlayStation, phones, & even Nintendo consoles. Who would’ve ever thought that the two biggest rivals at the time would appear on a game together? But it happened and it’s been a success. In 2017 two new Sonic games are scheduled to be released. So after being on the brink of extinction, Sonic has made a comeback.
So after viewing both sides of the argument, which would you say is the winner? Is it Mario, who’s shown that he has staying power and has continued to be a fixture in not just Nintendo history but in gaming history period? Or is it Sonic the Hedgehog, who also has shown that he is a fixture in gaming history as well? Both have shown that they have staying power. Sonic at one time was almost on the brink of elimination but has bounced back and is still relevant in gaming history. But I’m going have to give the nod to Mario. Mario has been around thru each console faze and doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon. The Mario franchise has so many games under its belt that even the supporting cast have become household names in gaming history. So the winner is….MARIO!!!! Please feel free to leave your comments on who do you think is better.
